Barbara moved from Italy to Darwin in 2019 on a student visa, choosing Darwin above all else, because, in her words, “it is the place to be… A place where if you are working hard, you can have great opportunities!”
Prior to moving, Barbara had been to Australia and Darwin before and found it to be love at first sight. She says she felt Darwin was a very easy-going place, with lovely, friendly people, and a place where she’d never feel alone.
When it came to choosing where to study, Barbara said she chose Alana Kaye College because of the great feedback she found in her own research on the college, while also being highly recommended by her immigration agent because of the quality of education we are well-known for providing to our international students.
In terms of choosing what the study, Barbara says it was an easy choice. “I was always passionate in caring for children and infants, so what a better opportunity for my career than to proceed with Early Childhood Education and Care!”
Once Barbara commenced her CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood and Care with Alana Kaye, she found work locally as a Floater Educator at La Creche Childcare in Parap, before later being prompted to Room Leader in their Nursery Room during her second year Diploma studies.
While studying her CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, Barbara also saw an opportunity to apply for the Study NT International Student Ambassador in 2021, and much to her surprise, she was successfully selected.
“It was the best experience ever” says Barbara, while citing her favourite memories as being able to meet and talk with new international students as a support for them, while also being supported herself by Study NT in her time as an international student ambassador, allowing her to grow both personally, and as a student. “I met so many important and beautiful people” says Barbara.
After 2 years working at La Creche Childcare, Barbara decided to change roles where she then began working for a small childcare. Speaking of her decision to move she told us, “I was looking for a different professional environment and more growth in my role”.
Thanks to her studies, Barbara successfully continues working in the Early Childhood Education and Care sector, now working as a Lead Educator at Territory Kids where she is responsible for the Nursery operations and care. She has recently applied for a sponsor visa and will have the opportunity to apply for her permanent residency in a couple of years.
“I would recommend Alana Kaye College to everyone because of the high quality of trainers and education. I would encourage anyone thinking of becoming a student to not waste time. Figure out what you want, plan, and stay focused on studying. Darwin is a place where if you are working hard, you will have many opportunities to flourish and grow as a person and in your career. Follow your dreams, stay focused, and never give up!”
